Actions to support the public apology

In the proactively released documents you will find information about the $2 million survivor-focused fund announced by the Prime Minister on 12 November 2024.

The survivor-focused fund responds to the intent of recommendation 20 of the Royal Commission’s final report Whanaketia.

The fund also responds to elements of recommendations 71, 72, and 74 in the redress report and recommendation 19 of the final report Whanaketia.

The fund is for:

  • Non-government organisations providing direct support to survivors including survivor-led initiatives
  • Local authorities to care for or memorialise unmarked graves associated with psychiatric hospitals and psychopathic sites or other sites that were places of care.

The fund will be administered by the Department of Internal Affairs and a call for applications will be made early 2025.
